CHAPTER THREE

TUNING YOUR VIOLIN AND BOWING

When you have four fine tuners and the Seiko TSAT500 auto-chromatic tuner, tuning the violin is a simple process. Press the Power button on your tuner, and it should read 440 Hz automatically and in the C key without touching any other buttons. You must listen to the pitch of a violin string by pizzicato, or pluck the string, once you have the tuner ready.

Pizzicato

A good way to start playing the violin is to hold it in the playing position and play the open strings pizzicato, which means the strings are plucked with the bowing hand's index finger. Since you will not use the left hand to help play the notes, the strings will be represented as being open.

All beginners learn how to play the violin by pizzicato because to create a good sounding tone from the violin requires little background experience and little technique.
